We are excited to announce our 3rd PopUp Art Gallery in our shop! This Saturday, we have the pleasure of showcasing Laurie Smith’s work for Inspouration Art. Laurie creates paintings using pouring techniques, but also customized objects such as charcuterie boards and tumblers. Come by and support your local artist!

let's talk about art

Ever wondered how we create our Glass Art? Come to our Art Talk night. During these free events, a staff member or a guest artist has the floor and will talk about how they create their Glass Art.

With live examples, photos and videos they take you on the whole design process from beginning to start. Usually a special glass art piece is created just for this night, and often it is an extra experimental art piece.

On this interactive night, the public is welcome to ask any questions. Get ready to learn about some technical stuff!

We are looking forward to seeing you one of these nights.

Doors are open at 7PM, presentation starts at 7:30PM.

Bonaire DailyFresh

Bonaire Daily Fresh grows organic food in a sustainable way using smart technologies such as Aquaponics.
They provide fresh and affordable vegetables.

We were commissioned to create a big piece for their location that represents Aquaponics. We incorporated a wave, Tilapia fish, and greenery representing the plants. Jeff’s idea was to make a sunset background like how we make our sunset necklaces. In the back there is a light strip, which really highlights the piece as a whole.

It was a pleasure working together with Bonaire DailyFresh. They had a clear idea of what they wanted and together we created something beautiful.

Bonaire Daily Fresh is a very welcome addition to the island and we are excited to see this great initiative further develop! Visit them: www.dailyfresh.eco.

Exploring Glass Art with Jong Bonaire

In June, a group of twelve teenagers from Jong Bonaire, accompanied by their leader Tatiana Nicolaas, visited our studio. Led by artists Jeff, Joel, and Josie, the tour was aimed to introduce the teens to the world of glass art.

During the tour, the teens eagerly interacted with artists Joel and Josie, who shared their personal experiences as artists on the island and what it’s like working at MoltenWolf Glass. The teens were particularly interested in how Joel and Josie could transform their sketches and paintings into glass art. We could tell from their faces that it sparked their imagination!

A Glimpse into the Glass Art Process

The group explored our studio, where they observed the intricate process of creating glass projects. Josie demonstrated how she makes her wave frit design for plates, while Joel showcased how to do basic cuts of glass and taught the teens how to use glass shards for mosaic projects. All together, this hands-on experience gave the teens a deeper understanding of the art form.

Discovering the Studio

Additionally, the tour included a visit to our storage area, where a variety of glass, frit jars, stringers, and other materials are kept. The teens had the opportunity to see kilns loaded with glass molds for slumping and glass projects ready for full fusion. Moreover, they explored the tools used for coldworking glass, such as saws and grinders. As a result, this glimpse behind-the-scenes allowed the teens to appreciate the range of possibilities and techniques involved in glass art creation.

As a parting gift, Josie presented the teens with magnets with different designs as a souvenir and a reminder of their visit to the MoltenWolf Glass studio. We truly enjoyed their visit and we hope we have inspired them to pursue their own creative endeavors in the future!

New Guest Artist: Sea Glass by Jeni

Introducing our talented new guest artist: Sea Glass By Jeni! Originally from Brazil, Jenifer made Bonaire her home six years ago. From a young age, she has had a knack for creating things by hand, whether it’s jewelry, textile painting, or baking delicious cakes.

Jeni

However, it was when a close friend introduced her to the world of sea glass that Jenifer’s heart truly found its calling. She fell in love with the idea of using these naturally shaped and polished treasures from the sea in her artwork.

With determination, Jenifer started venturing into the ocean surrounding Bonaire, seeking out her precious sea glass often hidden in difficult spots. She puts immense love and care into crafting her elegant jewelry pieces. But Jeni’s creativity doesn’t stop there. She also creates stunning framed wall decorations and candle holders using the sea glass she finds.

Find more of her work in our shop and on her facebook page Sea Glass By Jeni.

Art Talk: Josie’s Journey to Creating Vases

In April, during our Art Talk event, we had the pleasure of witnessing Josella Martinez Mangle’s intriguing presentation on her exploration of a new glass fusing technique to create unique vases.

IMG_2491

Inspired by Earth Day, Josie decided to embrace the theme of the primary elements—Water, Earth, Fire, and Air—and translate them into four distinct vases. It was an exciting opportunity for the entire MoltenWolf Glass team to learn something new together as we delved into the “draping” technique, which we were relatively unfamiliar with.

To achieve the desired shapes for the vases, Josie used a Drape Mold. The design process involved careful planning of how the glass would behave when draped over the mold. Especially because the aim was to create different looks for each vase.

IMG_2490

The draping process itself is straightforward but depends on variables such as glass size and thickness. Heating the glass to a specific temperature between 1100°F and 1250°F, with a target of 1225°F, softens the glass enough for bending without melting. It takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes for the glass to gracefully “fall” or “drape” over the mold.

Once the desired shape is achieved, the kiln must be “vented” to reduce the temperature and prevent further movement of the glass. Opening the kiln allows the hot air to escape until the internal temperature reaches 1100°F. The kiln is then closed, and the glass is annealed as usual, ensuring its strength and stability.

The visitors at Art Talk enjoyed listening to Josie while she took them on her creative journey of trial and error. The crowd loved seeing samples and the end result of all four stunning vases capturing the essence of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.

Stay tuned for more exciting Art Talks at our shop, the next one up will be hosted by Jeff in September!

Our work at Terramar Museum!

On April 28th, we were happily celebrating the Art Exhibition Opening at the Terramar Museum.

“In Honor of the Ocean’ is the name of the second exhibition by WWF Dutch Caribbean and Terramar Museum. The exhibition is a part of the two year program ‘Boneiru Bibu: Bou di Awa’, which spreads awareness of the importance of our marine ecosystems.

Together with various nature organizations and other local artists, we did our part in showing the public our connection with the ocean.

The whole team of MoltenWolf Glass was involved in creating a multi-medium art piece consisting of 3 panels that represent what the people of Bonaire receive from the Ocean:

Food:  Bonaire’s relationship with the water provides us with food we eat on a daily basis. The fishing hook symbolizes the act of fishing, while the glass fish represent the edible sea life.

Income:  Whether it is water activities, nature, tourism or salt

production; our income and livelihoods are based on the ocean. The Bonaire Tourist map in glass represents all the activities that can be enjoyed on the island.

Life:  Without the Ocean, plants, animals and humans would not exist. We opted to create a Mangrove tree symbolizing the Tree of Life, due to its importance to Bonaire’s ecosystem. Underneath the tree, the sea creatures and birds represent all of life.

Panel 1: "Food"
Panel 2: "Income"
Panel 3: "Life"

The exhibition also featured the participation of other local artists. Sharking Daily (Rosaly van Dansik) contributed eight paintings, while Nu Kua Ceramics Bonaire (Monique Ojers) presented an intriguing installation. Jong Bonaire‘s kids created colorful wall art with bottle caps.

Additionally, organizations such as Mangrove Maniacs, Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire, and Greenpeace Bonaire displayed informative visuals and texts to shed light on their important work.

Thanks to the wonderful team at Terramar Museum and WWF Dutch Caribbean for organizing this great exhibition!

The exhibition still runs until June of 17th. If you’re looking to have a cultural day, consider checking out the exhibition at Terramar Museum first, and then head over to our shop where we are showcasing additional marine life on an entire wall. Our shop is located right around the corner at the boulevard – not even a minute walk from the museum.
